How to Find a Dance Partner for Ballroom Dancing?

Ballroom dancingIf you are very keen on joining our Monterey dance classes, but don’t have a dance partner yet, you may be assured that we will do everything possible to find you a dance partner. We have many students just like you who are looking for a dance partner for ballroom dancing Monterey.

So, we can always arrange to have a dance partner for you. In the unlikely circumstance of us not being able to find you a dance partner on a particular day, you can always dance with the instructor. This way you will learn dancing faster.

What’s important is that you should enjoy your dance lessons, whether you are taking tango, swing or salsa classes in Monterey, Ca. There are other ways to find a dance partner as well, if you are looking for a dance partner to participate in a dance competition.

Here’s where you should NOT look for a dance partner. Don’t go looking for one on classifieds or online bulletin boards. A lot of people who list on online ballroom dance bulletin boards or classifieds are not really interested in finding a dance partner and are not serious about at all – they are just looking for opportunities for romance or someone to hook up with. The chances of finding a decent dance partner this way are minimal. Instead, follow the guidelines given next for finding a partner for your dance classes.

Contact your local USABDA or United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association. The USABDA lists all dance competitions to be held in your area and lists dance studios such as ours too. You can visit these competitions or studios, observe the group classes in your level and find someone who is close to your skills.  You can meet with them and interview them on the spot. You can always watch the group classes in our studio; observe our students from up close and decide if there is someone you want to partner with.

If you are a ballroom dancing professional who competes in major dance competitions and are looking for a dance partner, we suggest going to the various dance competitions in your area as a spectator and identifying someone of your level, who you can partner with. You can talk to the instructors in our Monterey dance studio and ask us to introduce you to a potential dance partner, who is just as talented as you are.  We would be happy enough to make the introductions for you, and offer great suggestions on who would make a perfect dance partner for you, keeping a long-term perspective in mind.

Another option is to participate in dance competitions yourself and make a great impression. Make no mistake; you will be approached by several talented dancers asking you to be their dance partner. There are a lot of people besides yourself who are looking for a talented dance partner. You will be helped in this by the competition judges who would be happy enough to make introductions.

The last point – when you introduce yourself to a potential dance partner, be very explicit about what you are looking for. Find out if they are as serious about ballroom dancing as you are and if they are willing to commit their time to hundreds of hours of dance practice with you. We hope the suggestions given here are useful to you. If you are unable to find a dance partner yet, do visit our dance studio, we will find someone great for you.

Challenge Yourself in Ballroom Dancing

Dance classes
Dance classes

How do you challenge yourself in ballroom dancing? Most of our students who spend some time learning ballroom dancing with us, ask us that question – what next after having picked up the basics. Now that you have spent time in taking lessons, or participating in classes. What should be the next item on your checklist?

Okay, here’s what we would like to know first. Do you see yourself as a competitive dancer or as a social dancer? How important is dance to you? What do you hope to achieve in ballroom dance and how far are you willing to go to get there? Are you willing to commit yourself to achieving excellence in ballroom dance? What you do next in your dance life depends on your answer to these questions.

If your goal is to become a good dancer socially, then, if you are a guy, you should challenge yourself to learn how to lead a lady in a way that seems absolutely effortless. If you are a woman, you should learn how to follow a man’s lead in the most elegant manner possible.

If you want to become a competitive dancer, you will need to commit yourself to hundreds of hours of dance practice and strive to improve yourself by participating in dance competitions. Regardless of what you want to achieve as a dancer, you will get all the support you need from our dance instructors – the best dance instructors in California.

So the question is how can you challenge yourself to be a better dancer? The simple answer to that is that you must work hard to find the right approach, one that is tailor-made for you. Taking your dance classes seriously is the first step. Not only will you improve your dancing skills and become a much better dancer, you will also become a more accomplished person.

So, to challenge yourself in dance, you must establish a sense of positive identification with ballroom dancing and get obsessed with your goal of becoming a much better dancer. You must learn how to evaluate yourself as a dancer; set the right goals and introspect about what dance means for you.

Becoming really great at dance requires more than just talent or hard work – it requires focus, determination and a commitment of your time. It begins with setting the right goals.

For this, you will need to decide how important it is to become a good ballroom dancer, and have a clear idea of how to get there. Once you have a good idea of your goals, assess yourself as a dancer. Talk to your instructors about this and find out where you are right now in terms of your current dancing ability. Then put a systematic plan in place with your instructors’ help to decide on the steps to be taken to achieve those goals.

How long does take to become a really great dancer? Well, each one has their own learning curve, depending on the learning style, natural talent and ability, and the amount of time spent learning the right skills. What seems easy and natural to some can be daunting to others.

But you can certainly become a much better dancer than you are today with the right application of hard work, discipline and focus. But more than anything, you will need to be serious about how you go about it.  You cannot afford to be lax when taking classes.

You cannot afford to get distracted, because that would stop you from achieving your goals as a ballroom dancer. And yes, you will need to pay attention to everything your instructors tell you. Your instructors have been through it all and know what it takes to be phenomenally good at ballroom dancing.

Benefit from their vast experience as teachers and practitioners of ballroom dance across North America and Europe, and do your absolute best in practice. Excellence in ballroom dance is within your grasp.

How to Practice Turns in Ballroom Dancing

How to Practice Turns in Ballroom Dancing

It makes all the difference to your popularity as a dancer in a dance class if you know how to make proper dance turns. Spinning is what women like the most about ballroom dancing; they love nothing more than a turn at the right time or a back spot turn while locked in their partner’s embrace.

So how to practice turns in ballroom dancing? Most beginners in dance classes turn or spin repeatedly without really understanding the mechanics of the movement. While they do get it right at times, they will never really be able to master the turn till they get coached out of the bad habits.

That’s why our instructors emphasize on the basics during the dance classes. To start off with, students are asked to step onto one foot and remain in balance for as long as possible. If they can stay balanced on a single foot, turning on it becomes so much easier.

To understand this, think of a line drawn from the center of your head down to your feet, separating the left and right halves of your body. To turn successfully one side should turn quicker than the other.

Think of your body as a door, the axis on which you turn is the door hinge and the opposite side of the body is the part of the door that moves. This side should move faster than the part of the body that’s connected to the hinge.

You will understand this concept better during your dance lessons. In a ballroom dancing, you will be trained to start the turn by rotating your base – hips and below. So if you want to turn to the left, step with the left foot, start the turn with it first. Then, turn the foot slightly to the left and lead into the turn – now allow the whole body to rotate.

This may seem complicated here, but you will learn the movement fast by visually following the instructors as they demonstrate it to you during your dance sessions.

Try to stay on the ball of the foot as far as possible. So as your weight is centered on the foot that is planted on the floor, you will be able to turn without tipping over.

Here’s what you should do to practice turning during ballroom dancing. Step forward onto the ball with the left foot, and turn the foot outwards as you do. Turn only slightly to the left using your hip and leg muscles – in other words, a quarter turn.

Now, can you stop and stay balanced on the left foot? Try to perform this action, at least 6 or 7 times in a row till you get it right. Practice both right and left turns with the left foot and repeat as often as you can. Increase the amount of the turns gradually in both directions, and gradually improve your balance. You will soon be able to turn with ease and with style. And when you do, that will make you feel really great about yourself!

At our studio we emphasize on spinning and turning as that is integral to ballroom dancing. Practice spinning and turning during your latin classes such as Salsa, Samba, Jive or Rumba classes as these styles often contain a lot of dancing apart. You’ll be able to enrich your routine and technique being able to solely control the turns which is a very important part of dancing.

Monterey Weight Loss Programs

It has been a common experience of dance instructors that men and women – regardless of the age they belong to or their individual fitness level – are a lot fitter, slimmer and happier, after just four weeks of regular dance classes.

Regular dance lessons under the supervision of the best dance instructors in Monterey, Ca does wonders for your weight loss and fitness. The weight loss is likely to be even more remarkable if you back up your dance practice with a healthy diet – low on carbohydrates, low on saturated fats and high on proteins.

Of course, you shouldn’t eat out often anymore, or order pizza delivery. No more cakes, pastries, ice cream or cookies. Have more red meat, salmon, tuna fish, eggs, fresh veggies, fruits and nuts. You can’t stick to your old, unhealthy eating habits any longer.

But how effective is ballroom dancing for weight loss? There is a popular dance reality show in Britain, “Strictly Come Dancing,” where celebrities who are not experienced at dance join the show and after several weeks of training, become expert dancers.  They learn waltz, cha-cha-cha and salsa. What has been noticeable is how much slimmer they appear over the several weeks they spend on the show.

The BBC Breakfast Show presenter Susanna Reid, who participated on Strictly Come Dancing claimed to have lost half a stone in just six weeks of dance practice.  Other celebrities such as Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh to actress Felicity Kendal have claimed massive weigh loss as well, after just a few weeks of regular dance practice. It’s just amazing how all contestants lose loads of weight and get fitter, purely because of dancing.

Dancing is a perfect workout, and when you’re put through your paces at Swing dance classes or Tango classes by the experienced dance instructors in Monterey, you will feel the difference too.
As Philip Harrison, a personal trainer for the fitness company Les Mills says, “Any exercise that pushes up your heart rate will help you stay trim. Dancing also releases feel-good endorphins so going to a class is a great way to boost your mood.  We often forget that getting fit doesn’t have to be boring.”

“If you’re having a good time dancing to your favorite songs you won’t notice that you’re working out. It’s not a chore when you’re having fun.”

According to Philip, the reason ballroom dance is such an effective workout is because we don’t see it as exercise. To us, dancing is fun, not exercise, so we are likely to work out longer and put more effort, which burns fat faster.

As Philip says, “When you dance the movements you make are very varied and athletic. It tones the body while working on your cardio fitness. It’s exercise in disguise. You lose weight because you are constantly moving your whole body. No matter what form of dance you choose though, dancing will help keep you trim so have a go.”

So book your dance lessons at our Monterey dance studio today. But remember, it is important not to be nervous if you have never danced before. It’s not necessary to copy exactly what the dance instructor does 100% of the time.

You should dance because it feels good, because it really works your body, putting it through a whole range of movements, making the body more flexible, building your stamina and boosting your energy levels. You should dance because such an hour at a dance class is known to burn 400-600 calories, which means after a month of swing or salsa classes you may experience a weight loss 4 to 6 pounds, which is simply amazing.

Remember, dancing is for everyone, no matter how old you are, or what’s your current fitness status. It is never too late to learn dance. Dancing is good for the heart, mind, body and soul.

Gym or Ballroom dancing Monterey Ca

Monterey danceOne of the most important reasons to book your lessons  is because ballroom dancing is such a wonderful physical activity. It gets your heart pumping just as running for an hour on a treadmill in a gym would; only, dancing is a whole lot more fun.

Burn Calories at Dance Studios Monterey Ca

You can shed serious amount of fat and burn 400 to 600 calories in a single dance class that lasts for an hour. This is extreme fat burning, very much comparable to what you could achieve in a gym. Just 30 minutes of dance may be equated to 5 miles of fast walking. The side-to-side dance movements involved in a typical dance strengthen the bones and help to prevent osteoporosis.

Here’s what research tells us why ballroom dance is so much better than going to a gym.

# Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY were involved in a comprehensive study of dementia – causes and treatment. They tracked 469 men and women over the age of 75 for almost 5 years. They found that elderly men and women who took part in dancing were at a lower risk of dementia than those who participated in bowling, walking for exercise, and activities such as climbing stairs or doing housework.

# A study conducted by a Swedish university found that elite cross-country skiers who did pre-season dance training suffered from less severe back pain from skiing than those who preferred to go to the gym instead.

# A study conducted in Korea found that ballroom dance was one of the best treatments for depressed teens, who were found to have much higher levels of serotonin, or the “happy hormone”.

Why Joining Dance Classes in Monterey or Salinas Ca is way better than going to a gym!

Going though your paces at tango classes or swing classes is way more interesting than going to a hip-hop or zumba dance style aerobic class. This is because learning dance is a whole lot more fun, more interactive or romantic than a dance-aerobic class.

It’s possible to achieve peak physical fitness by learning dance at dance studios just as you would by going to a gym, slogging away for hours with dumbbells. But surely, you won’t get the same enjoyment and satisfaction out of your gym work as you would get after a session with your partner.

Ballroom dance is a perfect total body cardio and aerobic workout. A typical dance is not really of a particularly high intensity, which means anybody can do it, so could you – no matter what the current state of your fitness is or how old you are. When you learn dance at dance studios you feel healthier and fitter, and find a great improvement in the cardiovascular system. You feel your stamina getting built up, even as you burn calories and shed fat.

An hour in dance classes can burn 400 to 600 calories, which is simply amazing.  What this means is you can potentially lose anywhere from 5 to 8 pounds after a month of dance classes, provided you are regular, and take part in the dance routine with a great deal of enthusiasm.

A typical one-hour dance class strengthens the core, firms up the abs, and makes the skin tighter. When you learn Swing, Tango, or Waltz, the head and shoulder rolls that you perform are an excellent workout for the upper body, especially for the neck. The fast footwork burns leg fat, stretches the calves, strengthen the ankles. Lifting your partner during the dance routine has the same effect on your body as a perfect squat, tightening the thighs and firming up the butt.

Father-Daughter Dance in Monterey, California

One of the most emotional moments during a wedding is the father-daughter dance. It is also, perhaps, the hardest part of a wedding. Tears would be in full flow during the father-dance dance. You would be crying, smearing your making, while your dad, one of the strongest men in the world, is likely to completely lose it as well.

Your dad, even more than you, is likely to be overwhelmed by the experience of the father-daughter dance. The father-daughter dance represents the moment that your dad finally realizes that he would be giving you over to another man, your husband.

Your dad would think about how he is no longer the most important man in your life that his little girl has grown up and moved on and would no longer be around, waiting for him to come home from office and tell him about her day in school.

The father-daughter dance is full of such sweet moments, extremely emotional moments, and none among your family and friends will be left with a dry eye either. It is such a lovely time for everyone.

But for the father-daughter to go off really well, both you and your dad would need to put in a lot of practice. Well, you may be in the prime of your youth and be extremely fit, but your dad will be slowed down by age and several ailments. That’s why it’s important for both you and your dad to join dance classes Monterey Ca or dance classes Salinas Ca and be trained by an experienced dance instructor.

When you join a Monterey dance school with your dad, the dance instructors will make sure that the pace is just right, and that your dad will have no difficulty at adjusting.

Learning the father-daughter dance at dance studios Monterey Ca can be a really fun experience. It would perhaps bring back memories of your childhood when both you and your dad used to dance to music in your living room, with your little feet on his toes.

Your dad would feel very emotional during his dance classes Monterey Ca or at dance classes Salinas Ca, because he will be thinking about all the wonderful moments of your childhood. But remember to shake him up, because there’s a job to be done here – impress all the people at your wedding with the perfect father-daughter dance.

Now, nobody expects the father-daughter dance to be perfect, but it would help quite a lot if both you and your dad are in sync. That would make the experience all the more awesome and unforgettable. It would be something your father would, several years later, talk about with his grandchildren – maybe he will tell them about how, at his age, he danced better than their mother on her own wedding!

But there is a lot of work to be done before that. First you should select a song that your dad would love, but not get too emotional about. You definitely wouldn’t want your dad to collapse into a heap of tears during the father-daughter dance, unable to control his emotions because of a particularly lovely song that reminds him of you when you were three years old!

So, if “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” would make your dad too emotional, choose something else. Something that is fun, and less emotional.

And before the song is played, walk over to your dad, tell him how he will always be the no.1 man in your life, even after your marriage and no matter how grown up you become. Tell him about how much you love him and always will. Tell him about how he has looked after you all your life so far, and now it’s your turn to take care of him. Then ask the DJ to turn the music on and begin the blissful father-daughter dance. There won’t be a single dry eye out there, among your friends and family, watching the two of you. It is a moment that will live with you forever.

Join dance studios Monterey Ca along with your dad and learn your dance lessons under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

Three of the most popular Latin American dance styles in Monterey, Ca

When it comes to our hobbies and pastimes, generally speaking, most of us don’t get that much time to relax and enjoy ourselves. When we do however, it’s important to spend our free time doing what we love and what we feel especially passionate about. Some people enjoy going to the gym, some people enjoy keeping fit, some people paint, some garden, but one pastime and physical activity that has been practised for centuries upon centuries, is dancing. Dancing is a beautiful art, no matter which form you happen to practice. Whether you’re into salsa, jive, swing, street, or anything else for that matter, the great thing is that dancing ahs numerous benefits, including the fact that it helps us to lose weight, tone our muscles, improve our cardiovascular fitness, and generally live a healthier and happier life. American dance styles, or rather Latin American dance styles, are especially influential and popular amongst keen dancers all over the world, and for that reason, let’s take a look at three of the most popular styles.

Cha Cha Cha – Sometimes referred to as the Cha Cha, this dance, which originated in Cuba, is very similar to the Mambo in style. The difference however, is that after the initial movement of stepping forwards, backwards, and shifting the weight between each foot, the Cha Cha Cha will then add a set of three additional steps, which are all completed very quickly. That’s one Cha for each step, so now you know how it got its name.

Rumba – The rumba basically consists of not one, but just two, quick steps, quickly followed by a much slower step which actually takes up two whole beats to complete. A great way of guiding your movements when dancing the Rumba, is to use a box-like square pattern on the floor. The Rumba was originally danced with very quick steps, but ballroom Rumba dancing now involves much slower and controlled steps, making it a more intimate dance.

Samba – This dance is of Brazilian origin and is actually danced to music with exactly the same name. In Brazil, many different variations of samba dancing have developed over the years, with some for solo individuals, whilst others are for couples. With different samba dances, different samba music will be paired, with the speed of the actual dance itself relying on the music that is being played. Many carnival events in Brazil, particularly in Rio, involve a number of samba dancers in costume putting on an amazing show.

How to take the best possible care of your dancing shoes

dance shoes
dancing shoes

As we all love to have a good dance now and then, it’s no wonder that this gentle yet ancient art is still just as popular now, as it was all those centuries ago. It’s what helps to liberate us, setting us free from the stresses and problems of everyday life. If you find yourself at a loose end one day, then taking up dancing could be exactly what you need. Before you even consider signing up however, you must first be aware of what you need, and where you can get it from. Take shoes for instance. Dance shoes come in a variety of different shapes, styles, colours, and sizes, so it’s important to know which is right for you, as well as how to keep them in the best possible condition. In this article we’ll be looking at how to take the best possible care of your dancing shoes.

Keep them clean and washed – Just because dancing is predominantly performed indoors, doesn’t mean that you should simply choose not to wash them, as they aren’t coated in dirt. Your feet will still sweat when you dance, and nasty conditions such as athletes foot can thrive in warm moist conditions. It’s best to wash them by hand, in a sink full of warm soapy water, and a touch of disinfectant. Leave them to dry naturally, and you’re good to go from there. Never put them in a washing machine or a tumble dryer. Doing this could seriously damage the shoes. You don’t need to wash them every day, but once a fortnight should be sufficient enough.

Never wear them out in public – You wear DANCE shoes for DANCING not socialising with friends, or just calling round to the local convenience store because you’re in a rush. The shoes are designed to be worn in and on the surfaces in which dancing is most common. Not on hard asphalt or muddy damp grass. Take the time to slip the right pair of shoes on instead.

Keep the sole in the best possible condition – If you own a pair of dancing shoes that you’re particularly fond of, then if the soles become worn out or damaged, you might not want to throw them away. Many stores will actually be able to replace the sole, or help bring it back to its best condition. Suede soled shoes in particular need to be maintained especially well, and could benefit greatly from a visit to a shoe repair store.

Where to find the best dance shoes – If you are in need of new dance shoes, particularly ballroom dancing shoes, then our dance studio in PG has a vast array of shoes on offer for both men and women, all of the best quality, and at affordable prices too.

We’ll be taking a look at the history of the dance, how you could benefit from performing it yourself, and where would be the best place to learn. So, without any further hesitation, let’s begin.

What is the Viennese Waltz, and how did it originate? – The Viennese Waltz is a German ballroom dance, which originated in Vienna. What people now know as the Viennese Waltz, is actually simply the original version of the original Waltz, the first ballroom dance which was performed in closed hold position. What makes this especially significant is that a closed hold position, is generally known as a “waltz” position in this day and age. It is a rotary style of dance, in which the dancers are constantly being turned and rotated towards the lead dancer’s right or left. In actual fact, a true Viennese waltz should only be performed by using turns and change steps. Anything less can simply not be considered a true Viennese waltz.

How the Viennese waltz could benefit you – Any type and style of dancing is a very good form of cardiovascular exercise, which is great for your heart, making you fitter and healthier, and helping you to burn off excess calories and lose weight.
